The CU Center for COMBAT Research Symposium is a 2-day, in-person, invitation-only working meeting with smaller work groups that combine academic, government, and industry leaders and learners in military health research and innovation whose work aligns with the Center’s aim to “save and improve lives on the battlefield and at home.”

This professional military education event focuses on leadership, high impact health research, and health care innovation. Topics discussed included: critical injury and illness, psychological health and readiness, prolonged and enroute care, and care in resource constrained environments; military-civilian partnerships; innovation to enhance medical capability and capacity; and biomedical informatics for cutting-edge data science. Optional research skills training was offered.

This working meeting was organized around keynote lectures, facilitated workgroup discussion, and research poster presentations. Participants identified strategic and operational plans to solve the U.S. military’s toughest medical challenges. Our invitation-only panel of experts led work groups for real-time collaboration and creative solutions for cutting-edge medical capabilities that save and improve warfighter lives and support force readiness.

FAQ

Despite travel limitations, we had 100+ invited participants from academia, industry, and government thought leaders participate in this educational event and working meeting.

Please see the full agenda for experts, including Army 7th Infantry Division Deputy Commanding General, Joint Staff Surgeon, and Naval Medical Research Commander. Example work group topics included Innovation and leadership today for tomorrow’s wars; Advancing solutions for critical injury and illness in large scale combat operations; and Military-civilian partnerships to prepare for the future fight.

Learning objectives for 2025 were:

  1. Military operational, medical, and bioscience work group leaders set challenges and facilitated collaboration on health care research and innovations designed to improve medical capabilities.
  2. Work groups integrated leaders from academia, government, and industry to create new approaches that could accelerate progress on cutting edge medical capabilities and improve widespread force readiness.
  3. For all suggested medical research and innovation, ELITE work groups identified steps to i) enable success in the warfighting mission and ii) expand benefits beyond warfighters to our civilian communities.
